HOLMES, EDWARD W., JR-, AND VINCENT A. DISCALA. Oxygen consumption, glycolysis, and sodium reabsorption in the hypothyroid rat kidney. Am. J. Physiol. 221(3) : 839-843. 1971.-Rates of oxygen consumption (Qog) and anaerobic glycolysis (Qco~) were determined in renal tissue slices from control and hypothyroid rats. Qcoz was 19 c/0 lower (I’ < 0.05) in tissue from the inner medulla of hypothyroid than control rats. Qoz of cortical slices prepared from nondiuretic animals was 24% lower (a < 0.001) in hypothyroid than control rats. After control and hypothyroid animals had each been infused with 2,500 ,uEq of sodium per 100 g body wt, tubular sodium reabsorption was 2770 lower (P < 0.01) and Qo2 of cortical slices was 30% lower (P < 0.001) in hypothyroid than control rats. The present demonstration of a reduced rate of sodium reabsorption and reduced rate of aerobic and glycolytic metabolism in the hypothroid rat kidney may provide an explanation for the exaggerated natriuresis previously documented in these animals.

Determinants of renal tissue hypoxia in a rat model of polycystic kidney disease.
Renal tissue oxygen tension (PO2) and its determinants have not been quantified in polycystic kidney disease (PKD). Therefore, we measured kidney tissue PO2 in the Lewis rat model of PKD (LPK) and in Lewis control rats. We also determined the relative contributions of altered renal oxygen delivery and consumption to renal tissue hypoxia in LPK rats. PO2 of the superficial cortex of 11- to 13-wk...

متن کاملRenal handling of sodium and water in the hypothyroid rat. Clearance and micropuncture studies.
Hypothyroid rats were examined with conventional renal clearance and micropuncture techniques to elicit the mechanism and site within the nephron responsible for the increased salt and water excretion observed in these animals. When compared with age-matched control rats, a decrease in inulin clearance of 30% (P < 0.001) and in Hippuran clearance of 32% (P < 0.005) was observed in the hypothyro...
متن کاملRelation between Na-K-ATPase activity and respiratory rate in the rat kidney.
The relation between Na-k-ATPase activity in homogenates of rat kidney and oxygen consumption in kidney slices was studied by employing different physiological maneuvers known to change the activity of renal Na-K-ATPase. Treatment of euthyroid rats with 3,5,3'-triiodo-1-thyronine increased Na-K-ATPase activity, sodium-dependent oxygen consumption (QO2[t]), and para-aminohippurate (PAH) accumula...

This procedure resulted both in an increased rate of sodium reabsorption and in increased oxygen consumption. Approxim...
